Cyber Monday at the Amazon Fulfillment Center in San Bernardino
As a top seller on Amazon.com, I’ve been fortunate to have been invited to peek inside and get a glimpse of some of the magic that’s going on there. I was invited up to Seattle headquarters last January to interact with and offer ideas and feedback to some of their software developers. This past Monday, the biggest online shopping day of the year, I was asked to pay a visit to one of Amazon.com’s newest fulfillment centers in San Bernardino, CA and speak with news reporters about my seller experience and the excitement of Cyber Monday.
As an admittedly all too frequent shopper on Amazon.com (Prime, people – you gotta have it!), I’m always amazed at how simple they make it. Whatever I need, I find it on Amazon. CLICK. And usually within 2 days or less, it’s on my doorstep 🙂
I’ll never forget the time I ordered a doll for my daughter and a key chain for my husband. At 8pm on a Sunday night. Less than 12 hours later, early Monday morning before we were even out the door to school, a delivery driver brought them both, in the same box to my front door!
HOW DO THEY DO IT?
Well, I’m not entirely sure, but it has a lot to do with how they organize the millions of items strategically stocked in each fulfillment center. There are 40 nationwide, and the one I visited in San Bernardino is over 20 football fields in size! I saw miles and miles of shelving neatly packed with completely disparate items – a sippy cup next to a book, next to a box of envelopes, next to a coffee grinder. Somehow, every item is catalogued, computerized, and crammed into every inch of available space. And the employees know where everything is, just by checking a computer. Everyone was busy pulling orders, labeling, packing, and overseeing each and every shipment. Everywhere I turned, there were shipping boxes whirring by on conveyor belts headed to the loading docks and waiting delivery trucks.
I got a chance to visit with Amazon spokesperson Ty Rogers, who I had previously only chatted with by phone in 2012, when he connected me with Internet Retailer Magazine. The magazine interviewed me for a story on my seller experience using Fulfillment by Amazon. Ty is hugely passionate about the internet retailer and knows everything about Amazon. He was there to talk with all the news reporters from the many local stations who came out to get the Cyber Monday scoop.
I had a blast being interviewed by the affable Q McCray, from Los Angeles’s ABC7 Eyewitness News team.
