I know there are services out there that send you the “fruit of the month” and “wine of the month” – NatureBox is the first company I’ve seen to offer a “snack of the month.” I already liked the idea of reviewing this product because I received the assurance that these were snacks that “do not contain High Fructose Corn Syrup, Partially Hydrogenated Oils, Trans Fats, Artificial Sweeteners, Artificial Flavors or Artificial Colors.”  They had me at “do not contain”.

The content of the snack box changes each month, but the ones I received from Nature Box were as follows:

  • Nuts for Granola
  • Whole Wheat Figgy Bars
  • Sunshine Chips
  • Firecrackers
  • Dried California Bing Cherries

As always, I turned to my snack experts, my two youngest daughters (Lily and Julia) and my husband Loren who isn’t really a snacker and is therefore very picky.

The snacks come individually bagged and there’s plenty of nutritional info on each bag (and on the company’s  blog) but they also included an information card describing each snack and offering healthy eating tips – not to mention a delicious recipe for cookies (using the dried bing cherries.)

Here is what my taste-testers had to say:

SUNSHINE CHIPS (not potato chips, but a “rainbow of vegetables”)

The squash, sweet potatoes and  carrots really have the texture and crunch of potato chips. The green beans have a little too much “stem”, but everything else is delicious (especially the squash, according to Julia) and not too salty.

FIRECRACKERS (sweet chili rice crackers, with an Asian twist)

Just the right amount of salt here, too, thanks to the soy sauce. Just the right amount of crunch, too. It was Lily’s favorite.

DRIED CALIFORNIA BING CHERRIES (not-too-tart, not-too-sweet dried cherries. Period.)

Loren’s favorite. Tangier and bigger than raisins. Almost like eating gummy bears made out of real fruit.

NUTS FOR GRANOLA (high in fiber and protein granola, low in sugar)

As advertised, because of the low sugar, it’s not overly sweet. Good with milk and plain. (Lily thought it was better with milk.) It had a strong taste of sunflower seeds that was enjoyable and unexpected.

WHOLE WHEAT FIGGY BARS (basically healthier Fig Newtons)

Tasted just like Fig Newtons, if they happen to be made with whole wheat flour and honey. Very moist and not overly sweet.

The Verdict?

We loved all of it! It’s always great to see my kids enjoy healthier alternatives to the crappy snacks that are out there. As teens, they are often surrounded by junk food and, unfortunately, they’ve developed a taste for it.

I know, too, that they would be very excited about getting something different in the mail each month and anything that gets them excited about healthier is a big bonus. Now if there was only a monthly mailing that inspired them to clean their room….

Got a special request?

NatureBox is working on new NatureBoxes which will address various dietary needs and personal preferences. If you are interested in a not-yet-launched line of NatureBoxes, send them an email (info@naturebox.com) to be added to their mailing list when they introduce new or customized NatureBoxes.

They only have subscriptions? Too bad, I think this would be great to try out or to send as a gift (thinking college students at exam time would be appreciated!).
